Biographical Details

President Silanyo unseated incumbent Dahir Rivale Kahin in Somaliland’s June 26, 2010 election to become the constitutional head of Somaliland.  President Silanyo earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of Manchester in 1965.  He returned to Somalia to serve the Republic Government’s Minister of Planning, Coordination, and Commerce, and as Chairman of the Republic’s National Economic Board.  He went on to senior leadership positions in the Somali National Movement through the period which led to Somaliland’s 1991 declaration of independence from Somalia in May of 1991 to the present. Prior to his election as President, he served in the Somaliland Government as a Member of the House, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Planning and Coordination.
